The Best Beaches in Kenya

Kenya is a paradise for beach lovers that features numerous stunning sandy beaches along its coastline, including some of the finest in Africa. From the busy beaches near Mombasa to the more secluded and undiscovered shores of the North Coast, Kenya’s beaches offer a diverse range of experiences for visitors.

The powdery white sands of Diani Beach, often voted one of Africa’s best beaches, attract travelers from far and wide to this exquisite stretch of coastline. As you explore the country, you’ll also find a range of water sports and beach activities, as well as charming beachfront hotels and resorts that pamper guests with exceptional service and amenities.

For a point of reference, Mombasa is the capital of Kenya, located on the coast. Most of the beaches are located along what is called the North Coast and the South Coast of Kenya.

Diani Beach, located on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya, is a popular tourist destination known for its white sands, clear turquoise waters, and lush surroundings. Diani Beach is located 30 kilometers south of Mombasa, in a section of the country known as the South Coast. There is no shortage of chic hotels. and boutique resorts along the 17 kilometers of wide, white sand of Diani. One of the best hostels in Africa, known as Diani Backpackers, is situated in Diani Beach. There are many activities as well. 

You can take a day trip to Wasini Island if you want to visit dolphins and sea turtles or visit the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary. Water sports like kitesurfing, jet skiing, and snorkeling are popular, as well as more relaxed activities like sunbathing or enjoying a beachfront massage. Moreover, Diani Beach is a great starting point for safari trips to nearby national parks or reserves. The Shimba Hills National Reserve, known for its elephant population and scenic landscapes, is just a short drive away.

Nyali is a popular tourist beach and is part of the Mombasa Marine Reserve. Nyali has two grocery stores, a movie theater, and banks, so you can avoid the busy Nyali Bridge to Mombasa. Nyali also provides the opportunity to visit the Mamba Village (largest crocodile farm in Africa), the Nyali Golf Course, and the Gombeshwar Caves. Nyali Beach, located in Mombasa, Kenya, is another stunning beach destination that offers a different experience compared to Diani Beach. Beach and Water Activities: The beach features beautiful white sands and clear blue waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Water sports such as jet skiing, windsurfing, and snorkeling are also available, thanks to the nearby coral reefs. Nyali Beach is ideal for travelers who want a beach experience with the convenience of city amenities nearby. It’s a great spot for families, couples, and solo travelers looking for a mix of relaxation, adventure, and culture.

Gazi Beach is about 3 kilometers from Gazi and about 30 miles from Mombasa. Gazi is prominent for the work of its citizens to regenerate the mangrove population, which was decimated by logging and chalk production. The Gazi mangrove boardwalk is a wonderful attraction.

Chale Island is located inside Kwale County and is arranged at the southernmost point of Kenya. It is the home of the only private island resort in Kenya, called The Sands at Chale Island. Chale Island is another locale where you can take a boat trip to Wasini Island to view the dolphins. There are a multitude of activities at Chale, such as kayaking in the mangroves, deep-sea fishing, and catamaran sailing. You can also snorkel or scuba dive in nearby Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park.

Kikambala Beach is situated in Kilifi county but is located far from the city of Mombasa. It is quite beautiful with white sands and palms but has minimal hotels and also fewer tourists. During low tide, the water is far from the shore, so swimming is typically not possible. While you find them at most beaches in Kenya, the “beach boys” or touts are unusually heavy at Kikambala.

Kikambala, located on the Kenyan coast north of Mombasa, is a quieter, less commercialized beach destination compared to the more well-known spots like Diani or Watamu. It offers a serene and more secluded beach experience, making it a great choice for those seeking tranquility and a chance to escape the more crowded tourist areas.

Mambrui Beach is a fantastic, unspoiled beach that lies near the Galana estuary. There are only a few hotels in the area, but the beach has wonderful sand dunes and motorcycle taxis are allowed to drive on the sand. It also has fishing huts built into the hillside. Venturing about 4 kilometers away, the Galana river has crocodiles, hippos, and flamingos.

Mambrui, located to the north of Malindi on the Kenyan coast, is a hidden gem known for its unique golden sands and tranquil atmosphere. This beach destination offers a more secluded and peaceful environment compared to the busier beaches of Malindi or Watamu.

However, for those seeking a more secluded and laid-back experience, Malindi Beach is an excellent option. Located in the charming town of Malindi, this beach is known for its clear blue waters and pristine white sand.

Visitors can take a stroll down the beach, visit the nearby Gede Ruins, or enjoy a delicious seafood meal at one of the beachside restaurants.

Watamu is set in Kilifi county, located 105 kilometers north of Mombasa and 15 kilometers south of Malindi. Watamu is part of the Watamu Marine National Park, which is a section of protected shoreline. It encompasses Turtle Bay, Watamu Bay, Blue Lagoon Bay, Garoda Beach, Kanani Reef, and Jacaranda Reef. One of the highlights of Watamu Beach is Mida Creek, located at the south end. Mida Creek is lined with mangroves and palms, running from the Arabuko Sokoke Forest into the sea, and provides a home to many fish species, flamingos, and migratory birds. If you decide to take a boat tour of Mida Creek, make sure to have lunch at a restaurant called the Crab Shack, famous for its crab samosas.

Kilifi is a town northeast of Mombasa, There are numerous activities when visiting Kilifi aside from its beautiful beach. You should definitely explore the Mnarani Ruins and Snake Park; the remains of an Arab settlement from the 14th century which contains two mosques and a collection of tombs. You can also rent a bike from Natty Riders and take a bike tour on the Bofa Beach Road.
